Twitter: lo usavamo già prima che esistesse

twitterSembra strano ma è proprio così. Messaggi brevi, molto brevi, facili da inviare e da ricevere. Così si presentavano le cartoline a inizio ‘900, come dimostrato da un gruppo di ricercatori inglesi delle università di Lancaster e Manchester. A quei tempi, il servizio postale si adeguò alla grande mole di messaggi scambiati e arrivò ad effettuare quasi le 10 consegne giornaliere nelle città più importanti.

Era un fattore di cui non ci eravamo resi conto. Anche se presentati in via cartacea, il funzionamento era medesimo e soprattutto costava poco. Oggi invece abbiamo la fortuna di poter inviare istantaneamente messaggi a costo zero. L’unica pecca di Twitter è stato togliere il momento magico d’attesa della cartolina, tempi di riflessione e di speranza, che la nostra persona amata o amico ci risponda.

Così affermano i ricercatori:

A differenza di quelle che vengono generalmente spedite ai nostri tempi dai luoghi di villeggiatura, allora le cartoline erano rapide quanto il ‘twitterare’ di oggi.

Come per Twitter esiste un limite di 140 caratteri, anche sulle cartoline si poteva scrivere una quantità limitata di parole che portavano a sintetizzare il saluto o il commento che si voleva mandare.

Molti utilizzavano slang comuni, altri giusto due parole. Tra i molti esempi c’è: “Spero che anche tu venga qui”, “George porterà il miale quindi non portate carne” o ancora “Vi stiamo aspettando”.

Le cartoline hanno fatto talmente furore che in pochi anni se ne sono spedite ben 6 miliardi. Un numero molto importante per le tecnologie allora presenti. Certo, non eguaglierà il numero di tweet inviati su Twitter in questo periodo di vita, ma è pur sempre un dato di fatto che le persone hanno sempre più voluto essere in comuncazione tra loro.

Ecco perchè ora i social network ottengono un successo inaudito, con milioni di iscritti che aumentano ogni mese. Come si svilupperanno le tecnologie per i prossimi decenni?
