Facebook, il social network per eccellenza, è stato più e più volte criticato per l’essere in grado di favorire l’insorgere di crisi depressive ma stando a quanto emerso da una recente ricerca medica le cose non starebbero così e l’ipotesi, già da tempo oggetto di numerose critiche, sarebbe quindi stata smentita.

Stando infatti a quanto emerso dallo studio condotto dai ricercatori della University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health non vi sarebbe alcun nesso causale tra la frequentazione dei social network, ed in questo caso specifico Facebook, e l’insorgere della depressione anche nei giovanissimi, ovvero coloro che rientrano nella fascia d’età compresa tra i 18 e i 23 anni.

Lo studio è stato condotto basandosi su un campione composto da 190 utenti frequentatoti di Facebook e vari altri servizi di social networking.

Mediante l’osservazione dei soggetti presi in esame sarebbe quindi emerso che coloro che hanno frequentato in maniera più assidua profili e contatti non sarebbero maggiormente esposti ad eventuali insidie della depressione.

I risultati dell’esperimento sono molto simili a quelli raggiunti precedentemente riguardo altri mezzi comunicativi, come le mail e le chat ma la ricerca, così come sottolineato dagli stessi ricercatori, è limitata a uno piccolo spettro etnico omogeneo di un singolo ambiente universitario ragion per cui “la conclusione va comunque presa in considerazione da tutti quei pediatri che riempiono i genitori di eccessivi allarmismi sull’utilizzo dei social media“.

Lo studio, che è stato poi pubblicato sul Journal of Adolescent Health, espone una tesi che va perà a contrapporsi a quella presentata non molto tempo fa sull’American Academy of Pediatrics secondo cui i ragazzi soffrono il confronto sul social network più popolare del mondo, in particolare quelli aventi difficoltà comportamentali ed un basso livello di autostima.

Non è quindi da escludere l’ipotesi che il nuovo studio possa suscitare non poche discussioni in ambito scientifico.
