Second Life: declino o rimonta?

Facebook sembrava un passo indietro rispetto al mondo virtuale di Second Life, che ha impazzato fino a circa un paio d’anni fa. Ebbene, l’idea di una pagina visualizzata in un browser (Facebook) rispetto alla possibilità di “vivere” un ambiente virtuale (Second Life) sembrava proprio che non avesse paragone. Tutti i tecnologi annunciavano: Second Life è il futuro del web 2.0, ed addirittura qualcuno lo aveva visto come “fallimento del 2.0 e sorpasso del 3.0”.
Tutti gli analisti del web che a partire dal 2006, hanno studiato invece il mondo tridimensionale di Second Life, hanno purtroppo avuto una brutta sorpresa, quando nel 2010, anno in cui Second Life doveva fare il boom, è stato decretato un fallimento, superato dai social network 2.0. Molte le aziende che avevano investito nel progetto di realtà virtuali, comprando isole e spazi, addirittura server interi.

Fatto sta che l’audience dei social network bi-dimensionali ha avuto la meglio. I problemi, non sono solo per i pochi utenti rimasti nell’habitat 3D del web, bensì per l’azienda detentrice e promotrice del progetto: la Linden Lab, che ha dovuto fare un taglio del 30% di personale, rimanendo “in ufficio” solo con i 330 assistenti effettivi e nativi del progetto. Ad oggi, però, si sta cercando di correre ai ripari. In primis non si avrà più la necessità di scaricare il software per vivere Second Life, ma si potrà viverla direttamente dal browser web, inoltre, sarà collegato direttamente a tutti i maggiori social network per la diffusione del protocollo.

I profitti di Linden Lab, purtroppo erano crollati, ed anche se la società si ritrova con una popolazione virtuale di circa 1,4 milioni di utenti ancora fedeli all’applicativo, si sta tentando di fare un mero collegamento più basico per portare la virtualità, nella realtà. Dalle tecnologie del futuro a quelle del passato…forse non siamo ancora pronti…risultato strano perchè i giochi in 3D stanno impazzando su tutto il web.
