Kevin Systrom: come fare un miliardo di dollari con un app

Paghereste un miliardo di dollari per un app per telefonini? Probabilmente no, però c’è chi l’ha fatto. La settimana scorsa il boss di Facebook Mark Zuckerberg ha comprato Instagram per un miliardo di dollari, e buona parte di questa cifra l’ha versata in contanti pur di aggiudicarsi il controllo della società di Kevin Systrom, che a soli 28 anni è finito nell’olimpo dei miliardari.

Ma chi è Kevin Systrom? E qual è il segreto del suo successo?

Andiamo per ordine. Innanzitutto diciamo chi non è Kevin Systrom.

Non è un genio ma un ragazzo come tanti, cresciuto nei sobborghi di Boston col sogno di fare il DJ. A scuola andava bene, tanto da poter essere chiamato “secchione” però alle notti passate sui libri preferiva i club dove mixare i dischi. La svolta avviene alla Stanford University dove comincia a interessarsi di tecnologia e siti web e impara i primi rudimenti dell’imprenditoria, che per lui è quasi un’arte classica, tanto che arriva a considerare Michelangelo e Donatello come i primi veri imprenditori della storia. In fondo Michelangelo e Donatello hanno preso un blocco di marmo e lo hanno plasmato con la loro immaginazione: esattamente ciò che fanno oggi gli sviluppatori di software, che realizzano un’app di successo sulla base di un’intuizione.

Kevin Systrom è un esteta con la passione per la tecnologia e questo gli ha permesso di sviluppare non un software che fa foto bensì un software che fa belle foto, ed è proprio questo che ha portato al successo Instagram.

Le polaroid digitali di Instagram sono molto più belle delle foto scattate normalmente dal cellulare perché hanno quell’effetto vintage che fa la differenza, e trasformano ogni scatto in una foto d’epoca.

Lo stesso Kevin Systrom ha ammesso che la funzione principale di Instagram non è quella di fare foto ma di “abbellire le foto”, con l’aiuto di una serie di filtri che permettono di migliorare i colori e le ombre, di aggiungere o una tonalità seppia dal sapore vagamente retrò.

Così Kevin Systrom “l’esteta” ha creato un’applicazione in grado di replicare il senso estetico dei grandi fotografi, trasformandoci tutti in dei piccoli Robert Doisneau con un paio di clic.

Un’intuizione geniale che fa leva sulla nostra sete di stile e di buon gusto. Sarà questo il segreto del successo di Kevin Systrom e di Instagram?
