Con l’incremento costante del numero degli utenti di Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg ed il suoi team, sono stati costretti a lavorare molto sulle infrastrutture e soprattutto sulla parte tecnica del social network. In primis, a dover essere migliorati per supportare la grande mole di lavoro sono stati i server.

 

Il network di settore Giga OM, si è interessato alla questione, proponendo degli “scorci” di informazioni, che rendono l’idea di come vengono utilizzati gli stessi per permettere un utilizzo molto performante del portale di social networking.

 
Il team di Facebook, un tempo lamentava sicuramente tutti i grandi produttori di hardware per la realizzazione di pessimi componenti che non riuscissero a sopportare la grande mole di lavoro dei server di Facebook, ad oggi, gli engineer dello staff sono stati dotati di strumenti diversi per ottimizzare queste strutture.

 
Il tool che è stato dato in gestione a Facebook viene chiamato Dyno. Quest’ultimo, riesce di base a misurare le performance e la potenza dei singoli server installati nei centri di dati del social netowrk. Grazie a questi, gli ingegneri della squadra di Facebook riescono ad ottimizzare gli “spazi vuoti” e soprattutto sono riusciti a capire quali migliorie tecniche dovevano essere apportate per migliorare le performance. In primis, Marco Baray e Jason Taylor hanno fatto sostituire le memorie RAM (rese ad hoc) che hanno ora il nome di FB-DIMM, ovvero Facebook DIMM, che sono andate a sostituire le più comuni DDR2 all’ora utilizzate.

 
Ad oggi, grazie al supporto di Dyno, i server riescono a non avere più perdite, ed ottimizzare tutti i banchi di memoria lasciandone (nei momenti di poca affluenza), quacuno addirittura libero.

Tutte queste modifiche hanno molta importanza per un numero di server così alto come quello di Facebook. Una delle notifiche più importanti, a livello di stabilità e velocità è avvenuta anche con il passaggio alle nuove CPU Nehalem, con un aumento in performance (ovviamente teorico) di oltre il 40%.
