Uno studio pubblicato sulla rivista “Personality and individual differences” ha evidenziato come potrebbero esserci delle correlazioni tra il numero di amici su Facebook e il proprio narcisismo.

Avere molti contatti, accettare amicizie da chiunque capiti, ricambiare l’attenzione agli altri in maniera differente, aggiornare frequentemente la propria foto del profilo, taggare spesso le fotografie, aggiornare stato e news feed sono tutti segnali che indicano un certo narcisismo, una voglia di esibirsi parecchio elevata da parte del soggetto interessato.

La relazione tra narcisismo e social network è diventata uno degli argomenti più interessanti negli ultimi anni per gli esperti di psicologia. A realizzare lo studio è stato un ricercatore del dipartimento di comunicazione dell’università Western Illinois, il quale ha parlato di “lati oscuri” delle potenzialità di uno strumento come Facebook.

L’analisi è stata condotta su un gruppo di utenti fra i 18 e i 65 anni e ha evidenziato correlazioni statistiche tra le persone che a un questionario dedicato hanno dimostrato una certa dose di narcisismo scaturita da alcuni particolari comportamenti su Facebook. Ora, è difficile stabilire se è proprio lo scenario del social network a “trasformare” l’atteggiamento di un utente sulle pagine virtuali della piattaforma, oppure viene semplicemente riversato in esso un animo nascosto che raramente viene mostrato in pubblico (o al contrario, ampiamente messo in mostra).

Sta di fatto che questo studio è certamente un buon punto di partenza per individuare l’effettiva incidenza delle piattaforme sociali sulle persone che ne fanno parecchio uso. Recentemente, altre analisi avevano sottolineato alcune particolarità dell’utilizzo di Facebook.

Tracii Ryan, ricercatrice del dipartimento di psicologia dell’università di York, aveva scoperto come alti livelli di narcisismo  a cui corrispondevano al contrario una bassa autostima erano caratteristica peculiari degli utenti molto attivi sui social network. L’Università di Melbourne aveva invece elaborato l’ipotesi secondo cui l’utente da social network è generalmente molto estroverso nella vita reale.
