Facebook ‘consuma’ meno di Google

Facebook consuma meno energia di Google per alimentare i suoi data center. Lo ha reso noto la stessa azienda in un comunicato stampa in cui ha pubblicato il suo cosiddetto “carbon footprint“, che corrisponde alle emissioni di CO2 da parte dei suoi strumenti e uffici per la gestione del social network. Dal dato emerge come Facebook sia sicuramente più “verde” rispetto a un altro colosso del settore, Google.

Precisamente, Facebook ha registrato nel 2011 285.000 tonnellate metriche di emissioni di anidride carbonica. Il dato può essere a sua volta scomposto in 207.000 tonnellate provenienti da quattro data center e il resto che viene suddiviso tra uffici e spostamenti in aereo (42.000) e quinto data center, ancora in fase di costruzione (35.000). Rapportando il tutto agli iscritti al social network, emerge come ogni utente consumi in pratica 269 grammi di CO2, somma che corrisponde alla produzione di due bicchieri di vino, tre banane o una tazzina di un cappuccino.

Data center, uffici e altre costruzioni collegate a Facebook hanno consumato in totale circa 532 milioni di kWh. L’azienda fornisce anche dati sul mix energetico, suddiviso nello specifico per il 23% pulita e rinnovabile, 27% carbone, 17% gas naturale, 13% nucleare e 20% non classificabile. L’obiettivo è raggiungere il 25% di fonti di energia rinnovabili entro il 2014 grazie alla costruzione del data center di Lulea, in Svezia, pensato per sfruttare le basse temperature per il sistema di raffreddamento e ridurre così l’impatto ambientale.

Approvazione e soddisfazione da parte di Greenpeace, che tramite Gary Cook ammette di essere molto sollevata dai progressi fatti dal re dei social network per la salvaguardia dell’ambiente con la speranza che le cose possano addirittura migliore nei prossimi anni.

E Google? Il confronto è sinceramente impietoso, visto che nel 2010, l’azienda di Mountain View responsabile dell’omonimo motore di ricerca ha emesso la “bellezza” di 1,5 milioni di tonnellate metriche di CO2. Forse sarà meglio cambiare qualcosa.

    Jackie then prompted her unprepared father to read the excerpt that detailed Phil’s living situation with
    the stripper and another, rather unsavory ‘stoner’ flatmate.  

    ‘He lived in a place in Main Beach that felt like a motel with two weird flatmates.
    One was a stoner guy who would sit there blazed out of his gourd,

    Despite the raciness of the content he had just read from his daughter’s book, Tony admitted he was not shocked by the revelations.

    ‘Am I amazed? Probably not,’ he said.

    ‘I’m sort of trying to take all of this in. After all, its my daughter we’re
    talking about. If it was somebody else,
    it would be a different story altogether. I’d be so excited.

    ‘I’ve been round the block a few times. I understand how these things happen.’

    Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter between Phil’s male flatmate and Jackie’s
    mother Julie. 

    ‘My mum came over once and when no one answered the door, she put her face to
    the screen to see inside and that flatmate was right
    there in the living room, pants down, w***ing,’ a shocked Tony read.

    The revelations come after Jackie spoke for the first time about her years-long battle with drugs which saw her secretly
    go to rehab at The Betty Ford Clinic in November
    in 2022.

    During a tearful on-air admission, Jackie said at the height of her addiction, she took around 10-12 Stilnox/Ambien sleeping pills and 24 Panadeine Forte painkillers a day.
